Dick and I have been working in the yard a lot. Dick is mostly using the weedeater, I'm pruning, raking, sweeping. I'm going to call this a blue jay, unless I hear differently from anyone out there ... Brother-in-law Tom the Ornithologist.
After watching Rehab Addict on cable one day, I thought, "I can do that." So, using the watering trough left behind by the tenant and saving all crape myrtle pruned branches (not pruned in 5 years so they're quite long), I came up with my first piece of garden art. Because Justin rolled his eyes at me, I ask you,
Keep it and improve it? or send it to the burn pile? Results of this survey to be published later.
Jules would say I am more of an ornery-thologist, but I have done some bird watching. True Blue Jays occur only east of the Rockies. This is a Western Scrub Jay. Very aggressive birds. Up in the mountains you can see the similar, but very distinctive, Steller's Jay and the smaller Western Blue Bird.

Deletegarden art survey: I say keep it and improve it! I've seen beautiful sculptural things done with sticks! Mike made a piece of art out of a bunch of branches as a gift for his mom a few Christmases ago, and I remember seeing a gorgeous tapestry-like array of gnarly branches as art in a fancy house at Sea Ranch once. The key seems to be that difficult balance between organic and organized.
