To Tonasket

We were up early in the orchard and ready to ride by 7:30. We had a couple of firsts today for this bicycle tour: breakfast at The Corner Bistro in Omak and a motel in Tonasket. Restaurants and motels greatly increase the cycling budget. If there had been any available camping or a Warmshowers host in Tonasket, we would not have gotten the motel.

It was an easy day of riding, not too many miles and no mountains to climb. The best part was coming to some road work 4 miles from Tonasket. A big truck carrying big bales of hay suddenly caught fire. The driver noticed the fire, pulled to the side of the road, and disconnected the trailer. Maybe it was an electrical problem, maybe it was a problem with the exhaust. Whatever it was, it caused a road closure earlier in the day. Dick thought we should have left Okanogan earlier in the day because "how many times in your life will you see a flaming hay truck?" As it was, we had a nice chat with the woman doing traffic control and only had to wait 15 minutes before our lane was allowed to pass.

Miles completed = 353
